Revitalize Your Life

Newsletter October 2009

Good morning friends and trainees!

October is here and September has been a short and fast month for me.  How has it been for you?  Summer ends and fall begins, but it all comes too quickly.  If you blink, you miss it.    I hope that this newsletter finds you well and eager to take on October.

My newsletter serves to inform, entertain, and keep up better connected between trainings. It may also connect you to others who train with me!  I send this newsletter to my current and recent past training clients at Healthworks and clients in my fitness business through SunnyDayFitness.com.  I’ll share motivation, fitness facts, and notes about my on-line resources for you.  It’s all free and I always BCC recipients to maintain confidentiality.  You can opt-out from this newsletter by just replying with “no thanks”, but I hope you’ll find this useful and informative.  Let’s dive in!

=======        Haven’t been exercising much lately?  Here’s a dose of Motivation:  Did you know that saying “I can do this” out loud actually makes you more able than just thinking it?  One recently published study in the Journal for Strength and Conditioning Research found that jumpers produced more power in their legs to vault themselves up when they said something aloud before they jumped than if they remained silent. So go ahead: speak it, believe it, and let positive self-talk take your workout to a new height.

=======       Have you seen twitter.com, or do you already use it?  Twitter is a technology I love and hate. Celebrity twittering is often silly, and twitter plays to a very short attention span, but I am a fan of Lance Armstrong and I love that he twitters. In July I was getting his insider’s view of the Tour de France, life as a professional athlete, and his motivation. Now, I’m no Lance, but I tweet every few days, (or hours!) about cycling, triathlon, kettlebell training, and real-time, live events like the Tour.

You can find me in two twitter accounts — http://twitter.com/sunessa takes you to my personal twitter stream; http://twitter.com/sunnydayfitness is my fitness-biz twitter stream.  I update them sporadically as I still love/hate twitter…

=======        Fitness facts: Heart rate drops dramatically during recovery intervals. This year’s Tour de France riders achieve near 200 beats per minute (bpm) when leading a chace up the mountains. However, during downhill portions (not pedaling) and while drafting in the peloton, their heart rates drop to the low 100′s. A quick drop during recovery intervals conserves energy, demonstrates dynamic range, and proves efficiency in training. You should see your own heart rate drop 20-30 beats within a minute of recovery following a high-intensity interval.
You can find my blog about fitness for more about heart rate training and nutrition.  For example “I check labels and make informed choices about what and when I eat. But nobody’s perfect, and sometimes I slip up … a lot. When striving for optimal leanness, it’s important to keep it simple, so I outlined 5 simple tips for getting your nutrition in-line with your fitness goals.” See more at: http://sunnydayfitness.blogspot.com/2009/07/sunnys-top-5-nutritional-tips.html
